History of Advertising Standards Canada and Advertising Self-Regulation in Canada

ASC was founded by the Canadian advertising industry in 1957 to foster ethical advertising practices. For more than 50 years, we have been delivering on this mandate. To learn more about ASC’s history, read our timeline.

'57 ——1957 - Canadian Advertising Advisory Board (CAAB) founded.
——1963 - Canadian Code of Advertising Standards (Code) first published.
——1967 - CAAB adopts bilingual name: Canadian Advertising Advisory Board/Bureau consultatif de la publicité au Canada.
- Advertising Standards Council/le Conseil des normes de la publicté (ASC/CNP) established to adjudicate consumers’ complaints.
——1972 - CAAB began reviewing broadcast advertising to children at the request of CAB and CRTC.
——1974 - British Columbia and Alberta Advertising Standards Councils formed.
——1976 - Trade Dispute Procedure launched.
——1982 - CAAB merged with ASC/CNP to become Canadian Advertising Foundation/La fondation canadienne de la publicité (CAF/FCP).
——1994 - CAF’s Race Relations Advisory Council on Advertising produced The Color of Your Money.
——1997 - First Ad Complaints Report, including case reports, published.
- CAF name changed to Advertising Standards Canada/Les normes canadiennes de la publicité.
——1999 - "You respond to advertising – we respond to you" public awareness campaign launched.
——2001 - "We stand up for advertising standards" public awareness campaign launched.
——2003 - Major Code revisions published following comprehensive Code Task Force review.
——2005 - Comparative advertising and comparative research guidelines published.
——2006 - "Truth" public awareness campaign launched.
——2011 - "Dressing it up doesn’t make it true." public awareness campaign launched.
——2015 - "Creativity is subjective. The truth isn’t." public awareness campaign launched.
